Does anyone know how solar batteries work? Is there a special charger or does the sun charge the new ones?

I am asking about the small batteries which go into garden solar lights. I have bought some replacement batteries but cannot find out if they have a special charger, or if the sun just charges them.
ALTERNATIVELY: are my solar lights just kaput? They did not last long..
Solar charger doesn’t work properly?

I bought two solar chargers and the don’t work properly. I’ve tried to charge them outside on sunny days and the lamps that indicate that the chargers are charging were on. So I wanted to charge my phone and it worked even though it was only for some minutes and when I wanted to put the chargers back in the sun the indicator lamps wouldn’t turn on. I found that if I connect the chargers to the computer and let them charge for a bit, then they will charge in the sunlight..
Has anyone experienced similar problems? It can’t be right that you need electricity to power a solar charger, then there’s no point in taking it with you on a camping trip..:S

I wiil be going on a camping trip soon and will not have any 120v outlets readily available to charge my cell phone or ipod besides a vehicle charger. But I was wondering if anyone has had any experience using portable solar photovoltaic panels to charge their cell phones or other small electronics? I’ve seen some on amazon.com, but Im a bit skeptical about buying one. A link and some information as to how well they work would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do the type of solar trickle chargers that sit on the dash and plug into the cigarette lighter work? I always understood that modern cigarette lighters only allowed one-way flow of power? Not sure.

how does a solar powered ceiling fan work?

lets say i buy a 15 watt solar panel with a 7-amp charge controller. I’m gonna get a ceiling fan that is 12v or 24v, it can run on both. it is on DC though. how does this all work? does the solar panel store amps and then i can run it for a while? i need a good explanation.
i’m not even sure how many volts it is…it says its a 15 watt solar panel. i live in california so i get tons of sun…and maybe the fan might run 4 hours top on a day but avg is probably 1 to 2 hours a day.
