Using conventional electricity to recharge a hybrid battery must be inherently unsound: burning coal, gas, or fuel oil to generate electricity to be transmitted over power lines with all the loss entailed can’t be very efficient. If photovoltaic cells could do it, you’d be charging up your battery while you’re at the mall or the ball game

I have a sun lamp and have noticed that when I have it on, the charging light on my solar chargers come on stating that it is charging. Given that it is winter and don’t have a lot of direct sun light during the day, could I use that lamp to fully charge, say, a solar/hand crank only powered radio?
I know that using a lamp isn’t the greenest option, but it is a low energy lamp. I would have to hand crank for at least 2 hours strait to get a full charge on it.

I use a popular application on my droid that runs GPS to track my bike rides. The problem is that before I’ve gone twenty miles it KILLS my Vibrant (there will be no emergency calls dead). I need something to charge it on the go. Maybe it doesn’t HAVE to be a solar charger but ideally it would be something I could mount to my bike and use it to charge my phone while I’m riding. Hopefully it will also be rechargeable in case I’m out for forty miles (which is why I was hoping for solar). Also hopefully, it will not add any resistance to the ride. The weight is not really a factor, provided it can keep my phone going.

Ok so the scenario is this,
In July i will be travelling to borneo for a month. I have recently purchased an Olympus Mju 6000 Tough for the sole purpose and intention of the prevention of dropping the camera in water/ mud / in general!
Anyway straying away from the point the camera doesnt take standard AA batteries. What i was wondering was whether i can charge the battery (Li12b) using a solar charger and if so any makes that are better than others.

Today I passed my tech license exam. Now, what I personally think is the hardest part, picking the radio. Thought taking the weekly classes I debated on a handheld or a small portable radio. I have yet to decide. I am on a budget of around $350. Portability is my ultimate goal with the added factor of range. I have a small (10 Watt) portable solar power system. I would like to have dual (2m/70cm) band, along with auto patch features(can someone explained more about how this works) and data transmission (Please also go into detail abou this). If I had to put a rough number on the range I would like it would be 50sh miles. Plan to join the local ARES and RACES club. So a recap on what I am looking for:
1) information about auto patch, how it works, and the rules and regulations.
2) information about data transmission, how it works, software required, and rules
3) what personally you think would be better: handheld or portable station
4) models of dual band radios capable of auto patch and data transmission
As far as 1 and 2 goes, I know the basics (no ads, busniess, music)

I have a small building for use as a Studio. I want to power as cheaply as possible. I intend to get a solar panel and charge a bank of perhaps four car batteries. I would like to know how I can charge four care batteries with a solar panel – How do I hook them up? What’s the cheapest lowest Watt Output Solar Panel I can use to charge them?
ALSO – using a modern Battery charger (for cloudy days can I charge four car batteries at one time as well? How do I connect them?
